These are impressions from the first edition, organized in 2006! Since than many thing evolved, also the weather, it seems it is harder and harder to get snow in February.

The UIAA Ice Climbing stage, organized for the first time (9-11 Feb 2006) in Busteni, Romania, was a great success!! Four days of adrenaline at maximum and a great international atmosphere, in a superb landscape, under the Caraiman Mountain! The competition ended with great fireworks, but what is most important, is the fact that the competitors were satisfied and delighted by the Romanian organization of this stage of the competition. This lets the door open for future stages to be organized in Busteni! Moreover, the participants were impressed with the difficulty of the climbing structure, which was designed by Attilio Munari and Massimo Da Pozzo. They have been also impressed by the great atmosphere created by the Romanian spectators. For the sake of fareness we have to mention that there have been problems with the ice structure at the speed competition, but overall, everything is good when it ends good. Moreover, it is a great pleasure to quote Mr. Mihai Pupeza, the organizer of the competition: "The participants have been filling an evaluation form regarding the 5 stages of the competition in 2006. The main questions were related to organization, atmosphere, quality of the structure, quality of the routes and referees. I am happy to say that the stage from Busteni was rated by all the competitors as the best from the circuit, the marks ranging from "very well" to "excellent", to "they tried their best and they made it!"

All these might lead to the organization of the final event in 2007, in Busteni!! Mihai Pupeza is mentioning also that: "Yesterday (05.03.2006 n.n.) the four members of the Commission, which were in Hemsedal, have met with the local organizers, with the organizers of the other stages, and with the athletes representatives. I mention that it was also present a delegation from Japan, willing to learn, Japan wishing to participate in one stage organization in 2007. The scope of the meeting was to find more informations, the conclusions will be drawn in April, when the Commission will meet in Courmayeur.

I anticipate that there might be suggestions, coming from the athletes, that the final of the UIAA World Cup 2007 and of the World Championship, to take place in Busteni."

Let's hope all the best and that we will welcome next year the competitors in Busteni!!

For the first time, the ice climbing world championships will take place according to a five-stage calendar rather than one competition alone.

The five events will be:

21 - 22.01.2006 - Val Daone - Italy
27 - 28.01.2006 - Spicák - Czech Republic
02 - 04.02.2006 - Saas Fee - Switzerland
10 - 11.02.2006 - Busteni - Romania
03 - 05.03.2006 - Hemsedal - Norway

The competition in Romania will be organized by the Romanian Alpine Club in cooperation with the Municipality of Busteni.

Busteni lies in the center of Romania, conveniently connected via road and railway with the rest of the country and with Central Europe. Bucharest, the capital of Romania (international airport) is located only 125 km to the south.

Busteni is regarded as the cradle of Romanian alpinism and one of Romania's finest mountain resorts. It is located at an altitude of about 850 m beneath the fascinating eastern crags of the Bucegi Mountains. The winters are cold and usually bristly with snow.
